Ruapuha Uekaha Hapū Trust

The Trust’s role is to protect, enhance and administer the assets of the Trust for the benefit of its people. Beneficiaries of the Trust must be a descendant of one of the twenty-two owners of Hauturu East 1A6 and 3B1 blocks which were amalgamated to form Hauturu East 8. The twenty-two owners are the children of the following tūpuna who left issue; Te Aroa Haami Haereiti, Whatakaraka, Tanetinorau, and Te Riutoto Aihe.

Our History

The Ruapuha Uekaha Hapū Trust was established in 1990 as a result of a mediated settlement of the Wai 51 claim with the Crown. The settlement returned various land blocks including the land associated with the Waitomo Glowworm Caves (Hauturu East 8).

Waitomo Glowworm Caves

In 1990 Hauturu East 8 (part of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves area) was vested into the Trust. The Crown retained a portion in the Caves known as Section 10. The Trust owns 3 acres and the Crown owns one acre (Section 10).

Our Trustees

The Trust has a Board of seven trustees who are elected by beneficiaries of the Trust who are eighteen years and over. Each year, one trustee must rotate off (usually the longest serving trustee who may stand for re-election).
